In 1985 Hunter Douglas invented cellular shades, originally called "duette honeycomb shades". In response to the energy crisis in the late 1970s, they invented a shade that would help reduce consumers' energy costs.
The product has exploded in sales due to high efficiency of thermal protection from heat and cold. The product has developed into a wide variety of offerings. In the beginning the blind was only controlled by a right or left handed locking device. Now through some great engineering the product is available in corded top down bottom up, cordless standard, cordless top down bottom up, cord loop (for larger windows), cord loop top down bottom up, motorized remote and the NEW Odysee louver able from Comfortex see below.
The cellular blind is available in many sizes 1/2 inch, 3/8 single and double size, 7/16 inch, 9/16 and 3/4 single, 1 1/4 and triple cell.
Installation of cellular blinds can be accomplished in 3/4 of an inch of space. Usually full enclosure is 2 inches.

Most of the other manufacturer's have blinds very high rated r-valued cell shades and in particular is Comfortex and they rate very high on the energy efficiency scale. They also offer the comfortrac system.

Sheer which lets light in and is not private.
Room Darkening which completely room darkening and of course private.
