Aluminum blinds have been around probably the longest of any window treatment. In the 1840s, these blinds were held together by flat strips of cloth instead of by cords perhaps to shade the lift holes and like today they came in various colors. Venetian blinds, which are horizontal blinds, were patented by Edward Beran in 1769. Now of course there are many sizes and of course a multitude of color.
Many companies have moved away from the "boxed bracket" type of hardware to "unirail" which has a clean look and is installed from the back of the rail. The inset below demonstrates the various headrails offered by one the oldest manufacturer of aluminum blinds, Levolor.

Installation for this type of blind can be done in a little a space as 3/4 of an inch however you want to check the specifications with you sales person for full enclosure. This type of blind has become very inexpensive in the marketplace. Many of the box stores are now offering a cut to size version of this product. Caution needs to be performed about this type of blind! they are normally imported from China and the working mechanisms are plastic and break very easily. WindowFlair offers a budget program that matches these cut downs but are made to your size and are lifetime warranted.
Few changes have occurred in this part of our industry with the exception of Hunter Douglas.
